Ellen: Hi From Chiang Mai...

O.k it has been a while since our last entry... during our week long stay in Bangkok, we visited the Grand Palace, Chinatown, the Reclining Buddha, local Forts, Wat's, and shopping areas. We also traveled along the Chao Phraya river by water taxi which was a great way to get around and see the travel hot spots of Bangkok. The last few days of our stay in Bangkok, we scored a hotel with a small pool. It was great when the temp reached +36. When we heard the the temp was going to reach +40 within 48 hours, we knew it was time to head north to Chiang Mai. We decided to take an evening train so we could attend the International Car Show in Bangkok. I am sure Shayne will tell you all about it and some of our other Bangkok experiences in his next entry....

We traveled 14 hours by train in second class from Bangkok to Chaing Mai. They said it was the special express but we made several stops the first few hours. Catching this train was much easier then the one we caught in Suratthani.... We were lucky to have the four person sleeper section to ourselves but the dude in the next section was sawing some serious logs. Overall it was a pretty good trip north and we were able to get some sleep.

Once we arrived, located our guesthouse and clean ourselves up, we went for a very very long walk checked out the area and visited a couple Wats...When we arrived back at the guesthouse, I took another shower ( I seem to have 2, sometimes 3 a day....it's like beening in a sauna 24/7 - Thank goodness for A/C). Anyway, I ended up with a little heat stroke and had a nap while Shayne checked out the local pub. Come to think of it, my naps seem to be daily activity for me... so why should that day be any different from any other.

The following day we hired a moped for a few hours which was a welcomed experience. We visited the Wat Chiang Man and met up with some other travellers before heading to the night market. We didn't buy anything... the venders seem to have the same things as the other markets we have visited in southern Thailand but not as crowded.

As for today, it was an exciting day... we attended a Thai Cooking class at the Thai Farm Cooking School!!!! It was an all day event and it was amazing!!!! There were 8 of us in the group and we went to the local market before heading to the farm for the lesson. We learned all about the ingredients, made 4 dishes and ate everything we made!!! Well... almost everything....What we couldn't finish, we brought home in a doggy bag for later.... ummm Curry goodness...

Well that is it for now....It's time for my daily nap..... and tomorrow, we are going to visit the zoo

We have arrived in Bangkok after a first class over night train ride from koh samui. Our train was 50 minutes late and when it pulled up we barely had time to have out tickets checked(they don't piss around).hurry the train...... get on

hurry the train...... get on

The train started moving and the porter looked at our ticket and gave us that... WTF look. For a minute I actually though about making a jump for it because I thought were on the wrong train. Thankfully enough the supervisor cleared things up and showed us to our cabin. The train was old and tiny but it was overnight so at least we got some sleep. bottom bunk is for the husky gentleman lady...

welcome to Bangkok

We heard from fellow travellers that khao San street in bangkok is a good place to find budget accommodations. Turnsout there is a good reason. Its a touristy and loud place.

We wondered around the shops and hit the big malls in closer to the citycore, its a massive city and puts Vancouver and Toronto to shame in both volume and dirty ness. Holla holla city of squala yall.... Being the nerd I am we hit the electonics district but didn't find any exceptional deals, but one lady was super impressed with my new tablet, which they don't have over here yet.

One night in the evening I ventured out on my own and left Ellen to sleep. I met an American traveller who has been on the road for quite some time. He is originally from New Jersey and lives in Vegas. A very nice guy we chatted for about an hour about politics, travelling extra... we also made fun of the drunks who thought they were talking to Thai women prostitutes... but they weren't exactly women... As the American put it they were "shims". I was on my own so I thought I would take a wonder to the burger king at the and of the road. At this point most of the stalls have closed and its just drunks and me or so I thought. Several "women" began to follow me and two of them put their arms through mine as if to shuttle me off. Not knowing how to react at this I pulled the pinch the thumb technique, snaked out of their grasp and politely and quickly left the street Phew.... Close one.

We kept hearing from the cab and tuk tuk drivers on Khao San road "you want ping pong show". So I'm thinking... Why would I want to watch people playing ping pong? Sounds boring. They kept asking. So I broke out the old google. At this point I will one again wait for you to google "bankok ping pong show".............

That's strike two with your IT Guy if you are reading this at work. For those of you who waited ill sum it up with two words. Va Jay Jay ping pong (ok five words)

Were going to stay in bangkok and check out the international auto show. Then were off to the northern city of Chiang Mai for elephants and culture.

Ellen: It's all about the food.....

it only seems fitting that I write the entry about the shopping and food.... We arrived in Koh Phanang three days ago and what a great place to visit. We went to a few markets the past week and the one we enjoyed the most is the night food markets. yesterday we sampled a lot of food...I should say "I" sampled a lot of food. We had breakfast at a great little German bakery called the "The Sweet Cafe" in Thong Sala. (Our second breakfast so we could use the WiFi) Shayne had the American breakfast and I had the French breakfast (croissant) with a "cafe au lait" (bowl of coffee). It was amazing. Enjoyed it so much we came back today.

And for supper....street meat at the night market....the food once again was amazing..

That's it for the food portion....I could write all day about the food but we have to catch the ferry to the mainland...

You know the ladyboy thing was bound to be written about

Sooo it had to happend. yes, we met a ladyboy. For those of you that don't know what that is i'll pause and wait for you to google it.... ...... ....... Ok now that you are aquainted ill explain before your IT guy flags you for trying to look at wired Thai porn :). The person in question was selling us tickets to another island we are going to. This person was actually quite friendly but I was taken aback buy his feminine features including... well a full rack of ribs if you catch my drift. I wasn't sure about the whole thing until I listened to the advice of a good friend "check the Adams apple" (thanks Kent).

Besides hobknobbing with transgendered folk we checked out the big buddah and a night market, where strangely enough I sucked down an entire rack of BBQ pork ribs. We ran into the strange anarchist vegetarian artisan at the market and he tried to snag some free app development advice from me. I know I'm in trouble when conversations start with "you're in IT right?" Even on vacay the harrasment doesn't stop. ;)

You all know I'm definetly not the artsy fartsy type, I'm more of the sci fi nerdy type. But what happends when artsy and nerdy meet? You get 10ft welded aliens and predators. This guys store was incredible. I'm ordering some of this stuff when I get back.

We managed to burn the hell outta out skin today at the beach but we did manage to decide to head to one of the northern islands for 4 or 5 days. So its off to koh phanagan tomorrow on the ferry. If any of you are wondering why I have been writing all the blog entries I think its because Ellen is waiting for her writing mojo to come out.
